Having no idea what to expect, I was delighted to see a portable stainless serving cart equipped to hold and serve dozens of hamburgers to the many guests showing up with their chairs and coolers.

Last year it was spinach, now we are seeing salmonella scares with tomatoes. I have to admit that I am not one to watch the news on a daily basis, so when I went to subway and found that there were no tomatoes, I was quite confused.

The recent scare is caused by 145 people getting sick after eating Roma or plum tomatoes. The contaminated tomatoes outbreak has forced restaurants like McDonalds, Chipotle, Subway, and others to have to take tomatoes off the menu.

With several scares over the years, consumers are feeling less confident in our food sources. Although there is no way to avoid the outbreaks completely, there are measures you can take to keep your food safe.

Always wash your hands. Wash your hands with soap and water before handling food. When working with foods such as chicken, eggs, and other raw foods.

Make sure food such as poultry and fish are thoroughly cooked.

Use different knives and cutting boards when preparing different foods.

Always wash vegetables thoroughly before eating or cooking.

There are several suggestions and tips on how to keep your foods safe. These are just a few to get you started. Don’t let outbreaks scare you off from enjoying the foods you love, but be safe when preparing them.
